The Splash Hits Counter

A home run counts as a splash hit only when a Giants batter puts it in the water on the fly. Balls off the wall, off the promenade, foul balls and homers by visiting players don't move the number.

No. 111, the one still on the board

Rafael Devers off Nick Lodolo in the 5th against the Cincinnati Reds, Aug 26, 2026.

What is behind it

Thirty-three hitters, twenty-seven seasons, and whatever the instruments were able to record at the time.

Who put them there

  1. Barry Bonds 35

  11. Michael Tucker 2
  12. Ryan Klesko 2
  13. Andrés Torres 2

Who was likeliest

  1. LaMonte Wade Jr. 6 of 27 22%
  2. Barry Bonds 34 of 160 21%
  3. Mike Yastrzemski 7 of 47 15%
  4. Brandon Belt 10 of 72 14%
  5. Pablo Sandoval 8 of 66 12%
  6. Rafael Devers 3 of 30 10%
  7. Brandon Crawford 4 of 57 7%
  8. Randy Winn 1 of 21 5%
  9. J.T. Snow 1 of 22 5%
  10. Heliot Ramos 1 of 24 4%

Everyone with at least 20 home runs hit here. Below that a single swing moves the figure too far to mean anything.

Which side of the plate

  1. Left-handed 93 of 639 14.6%
  2. Switch hitters 16 of 201 8.0%
  3. Right-handed 1 of 966 0.1%

The water is beyond right field, so a left-handed hitter pulling the ball is playing a different game from a right-handed one. This counts every Giant, including the many who never put one in.

How this is counted

A share needs something to be a share of, and only one number will do: home runs hit at this park, for the Giants, in a home game. That is every chance anyone ever had.

Career home runs would say nothing. Barry Bonds hit 176 of his for Pittsburgh and none of them could have reached this water; neither could anything hit on the road, or anything hit here while wearing the other club's uniform.

Regular season on both sides of the fraction. One splash hit was struck in the 2002 National League Championship Series, and counting it against a regular-season total would hand Bonds a free one.

The rates by batting side count every Giant, not only those who put one in the water. Dividing splash hits by the home runs of players who already have a splash hit answers a question nobody asked, and the right-handers who hit hundreds here without once troubling the Cove are the whole point of the comparison.

Totals come from MLB's own statistics, refreshed daily while a season is running. Finished seasons do not change and are not asked for again.

Where they came down

Every landing mark on record. Point at one to see whose it is; the brighter marks are the ones with a measured distance.

Direction is approximate. It comes from a mark made by hand on a scorer's chart, and a set of hits that all leave one way cannot pin the geometry down any further. The distances are measured.

How this was measured

Three systems recorded these hits and each began in a different year, which is why the older ones carry so little.

From 2000
Play-by-play and the weather, so all 111 hits have a wind, a count and a score.
From 2007
PITCHf/x, so 67 of them say what was thrown and how fast.
From 2015
Statcast, so 43 have a distance and an exit velocity. Barry Bonds hit 35 splash hits and not one of them was ever measured.

Nothing before each of those is estimated. A hit with no reading is left blank rather than filled in.

On the chart, direction is approximate. It comes from a mark made by hand on a scorer's chart, and the published origin for those marks puts some of these hits past the foul pole, so the geometry here was fitted against the distances that are known. It fits to about eight feet, but a set of hits that all leave one way cannot pin down where they were measured from. The distances are measured exactly; the directions are a drawing.

Embed the counter

Drop this where you want the board to appear. It sizes itself to fit, and keeps up with the count on its own, with nothing to update later.

This works too, though it will not adjust its own height:

The board carries a small line crediting this site. Please leave it in place. It sets no cookies and stores nothing about your visitors. It does note which sites are showing the board, so I can see where it has ended up: the site's name, never a page address and nothing about who is reading.
